SLOVAKIA – POLAND

We’re not going to beat about the bush with this one. This is hard. Proper hard. In return, it is beautiful, proper beautiful, but you have to earn it. There is a wonderful sense of space and remoteness in Slovakia and it doesn’t take long riding away from town to feel right in the middle of nowhere. There is also a constant sense of travelling through time, history and culture as you pass through modern cities, old towns, past socialist-era housing and skirt Romany villages. It’s Europe, but different.

Whilst the trip is ideally suited to riding something in the ‘Gravel Bike’ genre the variety of surfaces you’ll roll over is ever-changing and endless, from the smoothest blackest road bike dream tarmac to something you might prefer to take a mountain bike down and everything you could imagine in-between. Have you ever ridden concrete slab tank track before?

We’ll be ‘soft’ bike-packing on this trip so forgoing camping in the woods and eating something half warmed over a fire for staying indoors in hotels overnight for the chance to get clean and having some proper stout well cooked food, with a beer. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Carrying all the kit you need for a few days cycling brings with it challenges, making the climbs a struggle and the descents just as strenuous, especially on off-road tracks where total concentration is required. It’s incredibly tough on both bikes and bodies, but the rewards are immense.
